The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989)
the best revenge movie ive seen in a long long time, best overall film ive seen in a long time. soooooo corrrect in subject, writing, dialogue, but the real gorging feast comes mainly from the main charachters wife georgina (georgie, helen mirren) beautifully dressed by john paul gaultier at arguably the top of his game at the time (late 80’s early 90’s) championed galore, anyway the clothes are almost tooo much they are ALMOST THE MAIN FEAST OF THE FILM, a film with a stomach churning, but beautifully artfully so, feast of its own at the end, watch it, i dont want to give it away, iam so shocked id never been introduced to it until i stumbled upon it, iam sure ive read about it, but never seen it and grrrl did i SEE it! it brought out a rainbow of evocations in me, which hasnt happened since i saw the holy mountain, i dont think, i could be wrong,
but back to the film at hand directed by peter greenaway, ian durys college mate (early english punk scene maker, and makes an appearance in this film), apparently a widely championed film maker overlooked in my forays into serious movie buff-dom, But one that makes life changing cinema from my viewing of “the cook the thief his wife and her lover” ive discovered, and plan to devour his back catalog, the film mentioned above with the long winded name and staring the above photographed beautifully styled helen mirren, is lushly landscaped, with a capital L, the sets are impeccable, her clothes change color with the movment of the color of a room which are all one monotone color, in a dream like room lit perfectly, example a white bathroom has a white outfit, that when she walks thru a door and the next corridor is green her dress is different and GREEN, next room, dining room, red, red the color of the film, which mostly takes place in. a beautiful parisian tomato red, which trompe loi back grounds and framed scenes it looks to be like a playset. in fact in story in set design my partner and i kept wondering, had this been a play first? but no its an original universe all its own where beauty and love and the good guy ultimately win, which in my opinion could be more rewarding, i wanted the man castrated, but he just got shot in the head. alas it was still rewarding to watch him wrench and die, and thats not even giving that much UP! this film is INTENSE, so its not for the faint at heart and watch carefully, be prepared for insanity, but be open to it and youll be rewareded.
